Sabine Appelmans Biography
The best female tennis player from Belgium in the 1990s, Sabine Appelmans played professional tennis between 1989 and 2001. She won eleven WTA Tour events, seven in singles tournaments. Her best performance in Grand Slam tournaments came in 1997, when she reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open. Appelmans played for the Belgian Fed Cup team for a decade, reaching the semi-final in 1997. That same year, she also reached her top world ranking: 16th. Winning three singles titles in 1991, she won the Belgian female athlete of the year award. After a failed attempt to become a television presenter, she became a tennis commentator for Flemish TV and was named coach of the Belgian Fed Cup team.
