Sound in all phases of the game, Vera Zvonareva has earned a reputation as a tenacious and sometimes emotionally volatile competitor. In 2010, Zvonareva celebrated a breakthrough year, earning a spot into her first Grand Slam singles final at Wimbledon. Months later, she advanced to U.S. Open final, losing to defending champion Kim Clijsters. The Moscow native reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 2 in 2010 and a career-best doubles ranking of No. 9 in 2005. Zvonareva partnered Nathalie Dechy to win the 2006 U.S. Open doubles title. In 2010, she made it to the Wimbledon doubles final with Elena Vesnina. In 2011, Zvonareva collected titles in Baku and Doha, advanced to the Australian Open semifinals and completed her fourth straight Top 10 season. Her two-handed backhand and her return are her strengths. Zvonareva graduated from the Russian State Academy of Physical Education; she is pursuing a degree in international economic relations at Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Moscow and has expressed interest in a post-tennis career in international diplomacy.
