Maria Jose Martinez Biography
Currently ranked No. 22 in the world, Spain’s Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez has 16 career WTA titles to her name – 13 of those in doubles. She has been ranked as high as No. 19 in singles (May 10, 2010) and No. 4 in doubles (July 5, 2010).
She played her first Tour qualifying in 2000 and finished in the top 100 for the first time in 2001. She won four Tour doubles titles.
After years distant on the WTA radar, she finished 92nd in 2008, finishing as runner-up to Maria Kirilenko at Barcelona and reaching the third round of Wimbledon.
She won one Tour doubles title. She sprang from 92nd in 2008 to 330th in 2009, winning her first two Tour singles titles, the first at Bogota, defeating top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki in the championship.
She reached the third round at three of the four Slams, losing to Serena Williams in three sets at the French Open, and losing to her again at the US Open.
She made her Top 50 debut on April 20 after Barcelona, and peaked at No. 27. She also finished in the Top 10 in doubles, winning seven titles, the most on the tour.
